Cloisonne(景泰蓝)
Cloisonnes first originated in Beijing. The earliest piece of cloisonnes was made in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). During the Jingtai reign (1426-1456) of the Ming, handicraftsmen found a dark blue enamel that gave cloisonnes a gorgeous, solemn appeal, which is still used today.
Silk(丝绸)
China is the birthplace of silk. Sericulture (the raising and keeping of silkworms for silk production) has a long and colorful history unknown to most people. In 138 B.C., Han Emperor Wudi sent ambassador Zhangqian on a diplomatic mission to the west, from Changan to Istanbul. The route, covering 7000 kilometers, was later used for trading and became known as the Silk Road. Many merchants on camelbacks and caravans carrying various goods traveled on this route for many years.
Jade(玉)
'Jade', or yu, as it is called in China, is strictly speaking a generic term for two different gems, nephrite and jadeite. The name is derived from the Spanish 'piedra de ijada', loin-stone, jade having been recognised by the Amerindians as a remedy for kidney ailments. Because of its beneficial effect on the kidneys, the stone was also known as 'lapis nephriticus'. That, indeed, is where the term 'nephrite' came from.
Silk Carpet(地毯)
Silk carpets, made of high quality natural silk, are produced in a complicated traditional way. Silk is lighter than wool or cotton yet very durable when properly maintained. A silk carpet is not only a treasure for a lifetime but can become a treasured heirloom. Whether you choose a carpet as a floor covering or as a decorative wall hanging it is really a piece of art.
